Spike and his partner were both employed by an agency on a fixed term contract at the time of lockdown, but unfortunately they refused to furlough them nor many of the other workers who were entitled to access the scheme but the decision is left to the discretion of the employer. Spike is an example of many other workers who have not been adequately protected under the CJRS because there is no right of recourse or appeal against an employer who refuses to furlough. Spike unfortunately suffered an injury to his hip during lockdown which has seen him laid up for weeks but he has fought hard and managed to get a job in a call centre which he has been doing from his bed at home. Without this income, he and his partner would have been left with £0 during this time. His partner has applied for hundreds of jobs without success.
