Melody Schroeder is one of the estimated three million self-employed people who have been unable to access support from the government since the beginning of the pandemic.
Speaking at at virtual event hosted by ExcludedUK on Friday, Melody shared what it was like to be one of #ExcludedUK, recalling how she lost "every single job in about two days" she went onto say that it was, "mortifying" to have to rely on the "good grace" of family and friends to help her with her day-to-day finances, and that she was struggling to pay rent and bills.

Melody, who provides training courses to the NHS, the police and the army saw her face-to-face sessions dry up when the coronavirus pandemic hit in March. She told London Mayor, Sadiq Khan that she is "completely devastated" that she has been excluded from the government's coronavirus support schemes for the self-employed.
"Being excluded is very difficult. I have always fought every penny for myself, I have always worked for myself since I was young," she said. "Without the support for the government, it's torture - it's been eight months of this.

In London there are estimated to be around 200,00 self-employed people who are not eligible for government schemes, according to data from the Office for National Statistics and HMRC.

With a community of over 60,000 members across all industries, age groups and regions, we estimate that three million UK tax payers have been excluded from the same support as others, which has lead to thousands of people losing their livelihoods, careers, and homes, and sadly, for some, their lives.
ExcludedUK has been fundraising to provide urgent help and support for those affected in the forms of business and career advice, debt support and 121 counselling sessions within 48 hours. Please find more information on our website www.excludeduk.org.
