As pressure mounts on the Government to overhaul its financial support, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has said he plans to announce more support to freelancers in the coming weeks.
Whilst no details were revealed, he did say the limited package of support is only for the City of Liverpool region, as he urged government to treat freelancers fairly with “parity, not charity”.
“The fundamental flaws in the system need addressing.”
He appealed to both the Chancellor and The Prime Minster and added “You need to stop the harm to millions of people now.”
This comes after an event organised by ExcludedUK, where all three Metro Mayors also listened to 6 real life stories from individuals all facing financial ruin and who are unable to access any financial support under current rules.
Both Andy Burnham and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, all reiterated those remarks and vowed to continue with the pressure to support the freelancers. Letters to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak have now gone out calling him to overhaul his support package saying the situation is “intolerable”, and that urgent attention was needed. All three major would continue to do all they could to support freelancers through their powers but called on the government to act now before it was too late.
